My Next Novel, and Why it Won't Be as Simple as I'd Hoped.

When discussing awful, horrible real-world revelations today (don't ask), naturally the conversation turned more towards fantasy and-albeit redoubtably-ideas I had for my next work.

As many of you know, for the last year or so I've been completing a manuscript. I've never worked on something that took THIS MUCH work. Seriously, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You have to be a bit mentally ill and eccentric to convince yourself that sitting in front of the computer playing with imaginary friends for weeks on end is somehow rewarding.

But it is. Call me crazy, I don't care. We have rights. So glad that  is almost finished.  It might end up being the death of me; friendships  relationships, and countless of my other projects have suffered (Graver Zeit springs to mind). But I digress.

I want to do it again. The first thing that came to mind was how I wanted it to be 'simpler' and 'not as epic'. Less complicated, and written directly for the young adult market (a suggestion by my good friend and editor, who has told me my current story lies somewhere inbetween YA and 'grown up'), instead of the larger than life, huge ensemble cast told in an overly-detailed world from up to six different points of view.

Yeah, you guessed it. The more I began to discuss it, the more I realized that while I do indeed want it to be shorter, and less all-encompassing with so much at stake, there would be multiple world-reticent conditions in place to explain the not-as-fantastical-but-still-pretty-fantastical world I created. While I enjoy the 'vibe' and 'feel' of pulp, My brain WILL NOT RELAX unless there is plausible socioeconomic conditions, themes and explanations so that yes we can see a bunch of 'cool' gun battles and character-driven drama.

If you're in the Seattle area I'll be at Mechanismus on March first crying that I didn't finish it on time and wishing I was dead, also homeless hawking my 'debut novel' Come by and tell me how amateurish and derivative it is!

If you'll excuse me, I need to pretend I'm in a different place. Thanks for reading!
